Modified aCSF recipes for adult brain slice preparation

Choice of optimal protective recovery solution is based on animal age

There is a clear hierarchy among the various different choices of Na+ ion substitutes that we have investigated thus far in the context of the protective recovery method for adult brain slice preparation.  NMDG aCSF seems to be the most versatile and easy to implement formulation across a wide range of adult ages.  In contrast, choline aCSF provides the best morphological preservation, particularly for brain slices from aged mice; however, it seems to be the most difficult to work with for full electrophysiological recovery of the neurons.  Careful consideration of the diagram below will aide in the judicious choice of modified aCSF fomulation to select for your particular experimental paradigm.
